Albert Blake (1923-1986)
Like many designers of the period, Al Blake moved from the Midwest to California after serving in the Army during WWII. He worked as a scene designer, then moved into full-time furniture design and manufacturing.
In the early 1950s, Blake was promoted alongside designers like Charles Eames and Greta Grossman. His work was included as part of the Pacifica movement associated with designers like Muriel Coleman and Luther Conover. In 1951 he was featured in a spotlight on “Young Designers” from California which included Blake, John Keal and Milo Baughman. Also like Keal and Baughman, Blake designed for Pacific Iron Products. His 1950 Grand Canyon group included seating and tables in iron with brass and copper elements. Unlike Keal and Baughman, Blake seemed to have a short-lived life in the design world.
