Jane Marshall and Gordon Martz both attended the prestigious New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. They married in 1950 and moved to Veedersburg, Indiana in 1951 to work in the family lamp shade business, Marshall Studios. Jane and Gordon brought ceramics into the business, which was founded in 1922.
Gordon had an engineering background and developed the clay body they would use and he and Jane did the design work. What started as a small aspect of the company’s output, ceramics became their main focus. The line produced by Marshall Studios included lamps, tables, dinnerware, pen holders, bar carts, and even textiles. The walnut finials and other components are a nod back to 1926 when Marshall Studios expanded to making turned lamp bases to compliment their lampshade business.
With selections in exhibitions, such as Good Design and national pottery shows, the popularity of Martz designs expanded rapidly.
In 1989 Marshall Studios was sold.
Jane Marshall Martz passed away in 2007 and Gordon Martz in 2015.
