Esther and Gross Wood were husband and wife designers who established Gross Wood & Co. in San Francisco, CA. They were self taught. Since building their first lamp in 1939, they worked diligently designing and prototyping an assortment of stock and custom products. This included bowls, wastepaper baskets, candleholders, and of course lamps.
At one point they boasted 75,242 models of lamps. They were focused on “well coordinated” items and an efficient product line with interchangeable components.
Wood designs are included in MoMA’s design collection and were exhibited in Good Design, 1953 and California Designed, 1955.
